At a glance

A one-semester exchange at UDLAP is done on visitor status, so citizens of Azerbaijan need a visa from the Mexican Embassy in Baku, and the days stamped at the airport must cover the whole semester. You fly into Mexico City and take a coach to Puebla; exchange students cannot open a Mexican bank account, so you live on your home card, cash and a passport-linked prepaid SIM. Off campus, life runs in Spanish, and tap water is not for drinking.

Culture & practical tips

Courtesy matters: greet before you ask, expect flexible timekeeping and tip at restaurants.

  1. Do not drink the tap water

Drink bottled water or water from a garrafón (large refillable jug); residences and most homes have one. Ice and drinks in established restaurants are usually made with purified water, but be careful at street stalls.

  2. Puebla sits at about 2,100 metres

At this altitude you tire faster, sunburn sooner and feel alcohol more in the first days. Drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and take the first week of exercise easy.

  3. Tip 10–15% at restaurants

Tips are expected at sit-down restaurants and are not usually on the bill; check for “propina incluida” before you add one. Also tip petrol station attendants, supermarket baggers and delivery couriers a few pesos.

  4. Greet before you ask

Start every exchange, even at a shop counter, with “buenos días” or “buenas tardes”. Going straight to the question comes across as rude.

  5. Spring starts in January

In recent years UDLAP’s spring semester has begun in early January and ended in May, earlier than ADA’s spring term. The 2027 dates are not published yet: check UDLAP’s calendar and the official arrival day before you book flights or plan the visa.

  6. “Ahorita” has no fixed time

“Ahorita” can mean right now, in a while or never. If a time matters, ask for an exact hour.

  7. Carry your passport when travelling

Immigration checks happen at airports and on highway coaches. On visitor status your passport stamp is your proof of legal stay, so carry it on trips out of Puebla and keep a scan on your phone.

  8. Hail taxis with care

Use Uber, DiDi or a taxi from an official stand (sitio) rather than one flagged down in the street, especially at night.

  9. Prices with $ are pesos

Mexico uses the $ sign for pesos. A price of $100 means 100 pesos, not dollars; check before paying in tourist areas, where some places quote in dollars.
